The chá de bugre is a small tree that grows primarily in the Brazilian states of Minas, Gerais, Bahia, Acre and Goias. It can also grow in the tropical forests of Argentina and Paraguay.
Brazil: This tree is commonly called café do mato (coffee of the forest) because it produces a red fruit similar to a grain of coffee, that is usually roasted and infused into a tea as a substitute for coffee.

Despite the popularity of chá de bugre in Brazil, the phyto-chemical analysis on the elements present in the plant are very few. Currently, we know only that contains caffeine, potassium, allantoin and allantoic acid.

Equally scarce are the studies on this plant. The main studies on chá de bugre is a must for Japanese university students who have demonstrated different properties. In 1990, it was revealed that an extract of leaf of chá de bugre herpes could reduce by 99%. In 1994, it was discovered a toxic against cancer cells: an extract of branches and leaves of this tree showed an inhibitory capacity by 40%. Finally, a study in 1997 verified the traditional use of the plant as a tonic of the heart and cardiovascular adjuvant.

People in the chá de bugre is currently marketed in Brazil as a processing aid to lose weight in the form of tea bags, fluid extracts and tinctures. Commonly attributed to this plant owned diuretic, appetite suppression and adjuvant in the prevention and reduction of fat deposits and cellulite.
Besides this use, the tea of chá de bugre is used in folk medicine as a processing aid in relieving the cough, regulate renal function, reduce uric acid and to treat wounds.
